Tenancy agreements

If you are new to social housing you will be offered a starter tenancy. If you are an existing Teign Housing assured tenant, or a transferring assured tenant from another social landlord, you will be offered an assured tenancy.

Starter tenancy
Starter tenancies help us to tackle anti-social behaviour quickly and efficiently ensuring your homes and communities are a nicer place to live. The tenancy is offered for an initial 12 months and is a type of assured shorthold agreement. At the end of your first 12 months with Teign Housing your tenancy will be reviewed, if no concerns have been raised during your tenure we will convert your tenancy to an assured agreement. There are some key differences between the rights you have during the period of your starter tenancy compared to an assured tenancy, these are detailed below.

You will not be able to:

  • Carry out improvements
  • Take in lodgers or sub-let
  • Buy the property under the right to acquire
  • Assign the tenancy to someone else
  • Mutually exchange
