We have now submitted our plans to develop and manage a permanent site for travellers at Haldon. We are proposing to build 15 pitches for travellers on an area of land adjacent to the current unauthorised, but tolerated site, which has been there for over 10 years.
Jo Reece, Deputy Chief Executive said: “We believe that the site we are proposing to build and manage will be a sensible and sustainable solution to the travellers’ housing need. We have spent a lot of time consulting with the travellers and working with our partners to come up with a set of plans that balance the needs of the travellers, but remain sensitive to the surrounding forest and communities. Each household will pay rent and service charges, council tax and will sign a tenancy agreement which will set out our responsibilities as a landlord and their responsibilities as a tenant. Provided planning permission is given, we are aiming to start work in October 2013 and the work should take nine months to complete.”
