Your right to buy your home

Buying your home
If you were a tenant of Teignbridge District Council before 4th February 2004, you may have the preserved right to buy your home. This means that if you decide that you would like to buy your home, we will normally sell it to you depending on certain criteria. If you became a tenant after 4th February 2004 you may have the right to acquire your home. This means that after a qualifying period (between 2-5 years) you may be able to buy your home, depending on certain criteria.

If you buy your home and it is a flat, you will become a leaseholder and Teign Housing will remain the freeholder. If you buy your home and it is a house, we will normally allow you to buy the freehold.

Leaseholders have to pay service charges for maintenance work or other ongoing contracts serving your flats. Some Freeholders may also have to pay service charges, for example if you have use of a communal parking area. For more information on being a leaseholder, please click here

Depending on how long you have lived in your home and other criteria, you may be eligible for a discount on the purchase price, up to a maximum limit of £30,000. For more information on buying your home, please contact our Customer Services Team or download our information booklet.
