Sort out your debts. Get advice online or by phone or refer yourself for free, home-based help.

Speak with your partner (if you have one) and make sure all the adults in the household understand your household finances. Even though joint UC claimants have separate online portals and claimant commitments, the money will only be paid to one of you.

Get clear about rent

Build up at least one month’s credit on your rent account now, and ideally 6 weeks. It will give you peace of mind and security while you wait for your first Universal Credit payment.
